Imefy, a leader in electrical equipment supply, has partnered with Bouygues Energies to supply oil transformers for the ambitious renovation of the Gare du Nord, Europe’s largest train station. This monumental project, validated on July 9, 2018, has earmarked a significant investment of €600 million with the aim of completely transforming the station by 2023.
Historic transformation of the Gare du Nord
The Gare du Nord, which currently receives an average of 600,000 passengers and 2,200 trains per day, will triple in size by 2024. This project, led by Ceetrus and architect Denis Valode of Valode and Pistre architects, will reflect a historic transformation, comparable to that led by architect Hittorff in 1864.
The main focus of the works is to improve traffic flow in the station, reconfiguring itineraries to facilitate the movement of passengers and optimize connections between different modes of transport, including soft mobility, bus, cab, VTC and bicycle services.
However, the most symbolic and visionary transformation is the adaptation of the station to the evolution of society. For the first time in France, the Gare du Nord will incorporate a 1 km running track on the rooftops, offering the community a unique facility for sporting activities. This innovative addition will feature public changing rooms and other sports facilities, marking a milestone in the integration of transport infrastructure with spaces dedicated to sport.
The collaboration between Imefy and Bouygues Energies has been essential to ensure the energy efficiency and reliability of the electrical system during this transformative phase. This project will not only strengthen the Gare du Nord’s position as a major European transport hub, but will also contribute to the evolution of train stations into more modern and sustainable spaces, adapted to the changing needs of 21st century society.
